Fireworks & Dogs – Her Fear is Our Heartache

Posted on May 24, 2011 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog, Insights to Dog Behavior No Comments

We used to LOVE fireworks. The 4th of July used to be a favorite holiday at our house, but after seeing the severe emotional damage the noise from fireworks caused our Nissa, we now dread them. This really translates into the old “The more we know of people the more we like dogs!” It’s not [...]

Batman’s Robin to the (Dog) Rescue

Posted on February 21, 2011 by Mom in Rescue & Adoption 4 Comments

Batman’s Robin is still fighting for the underdog! I was reading my latest issue of Dog Fancy magazine the other day where I found an article about a very unique dog rescue. Seventeen years ago (as of this writing) Burt Ward and his wife Tracy founded the Gentle Giants Rescue and Adoption non-profit dog rescue [...]

Laser Light Obsession and Injuries in Dogs

Posted on January 27, 2011 by Mom in Health & Safety 5 Comments

Quite some time ago I purchased one of those toy laser lights to use for playing with the dogs … and am I ever sorry I did. At first it was great fun, Nissa jumped right in and had a blast! Because we know Riley’s so darn dominant with her, we made him wait and [...]

Do Female Dogs Bark More Than Males?

Posted on January 16, 2011 by Mom in Insights to Dog Behavior 2 Comments

When we had our three Yorkies there was one female and two males. Our female, Kady, drove me nuts with her barking. Put her out in the yard and she’d bark at anything and everything. It didn’t even have to be moving. Heck, she’d start barking before her feet hit the back porch and there [...]

A Thing? Your Property? NO! It’s a Dog!

Posted on January 16, 2011 by Mom in Animal Cruelty 4 Comments

I just read one of the most beautiful articles about dogs that I’ve ever seen. We who love dogs do not understand how some people can treat them so badly. It angers us to no end. If we could we would take every single abused and neglected dog away from the horrific lives they live [...]

What’s Happening to Our Retired K9′s?

Posted on January 13, 2011 by Mom in Animal Cruelty 14 Comments

I just don’t understand this at all. Its always been my understanding that when a Police Department retired a K9 the Police Officer (K9 Handler) kept the dog like you’d keep any pet dog. Twice now in the past couple of months I learned that this is not always the case. Here are a couple [...]

What’s the Craziest Thing Your German Shepherd Has Done?

Posted on October 8, 2010 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog No Comments

I posted a request on Twitter today asking Tweeters of the “German Shepherd Lovers” flavor for their ideas on what they’d like to see for our next blog post here at Riley’s Place. The winner today is @tymclarenfan who’s idea was to ask people to tell us what the craziest thing their German Shepherd has [...]

Furkid Meets Furball

Posted on September 8, 2010 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog No Comments

A couple of days ago I was quietly working at my computer when Riley went into (sigh) Guard Dog Mode. This is a job he bestowed upon himself when he was about a year old and is a job that no matter what I do, he refuses to relinquish this self-appointed position. In his mind [...]

Dog Logic is Pretty Darn Simple

Read Before You Feed!

Although Riley's Place feeds our FurKids a raw diet we know that not everyone chooses this for their dogs. If you don't feed raw then choosing the right dry food for your dog is something that should be taken very seriously. Click this Grade Your Dog Food link for a great reference to help you choose a good quality dry food! Those of you who already feed a dry diet would do well to review this as well.

Issues with Your Dog?

If you are having issues with your dog, we welcome the opportunity to try to help! Please first attempt to locate a blog topic that matches your issue and post your comment there. You can use the SEARCH box for this. If you don't find a post that closely resembles your needs, click over to our contact form and tell us about the problem. If your topic isn't currently available on our site and we feel we may be able to help, we'll start a blog post on it. We *do not* provide any form of help privately by email or other method.

IMPORTANT! We hope that our responses are helpful and beneficial to you but please understand that we are not certified veterinarians, dog behaviorists or dog trainers. All information and blog post responses are based solely on our research, understandings, experiences and beliefs. Any suggestions made that you attempt on your own are considered as an "at your own risk" situation and as a decision you made thus is your responsibility. We are not responsible for any negative experiences you may have as a result of you taking any of our suggestions or using our methods. Always remember that what works for one dog does not work for all dogs.
