Before They GO to RAINBOW BRIDGE

How to help your dog cope when another pack member dies.

After reading the horror and sadness of Natasha’s story, I got an email from my sister Sandy with a suggestion for helping our living pack members to cope with the death of another that I’d like to share with you.  She does warn that this may seem morbid to some, but if you stop to [...]

BEHAVIOR CHANGE After Pack Member Dies

Posted on June 18, 2012 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog, Health & Safety, Insights to Dog Behavior 3 Comments

I received a private email from one of our website visitors about the death of one of her pack members that about broke my heart. The fact that her dog passed away is heartbreaking enough for a pet lover, but the visual I got when I read the circumstances surrounding her dog’s death are very [...]

Do Microchips MIGRATE?

Posted on May 3, 2012 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog, Health & Safety No Comments
Dog wearing a micro-chip t-shirt.

I am one of the most paranoid people I know about keeping my dogs safe. But I also believe that no matter what I do towards this end — unexpected things do happen and they’re not always good things. I’m paranoid, not perfect. I will never forget the day Riley at about 10-11 months old [...]

A Dog’s Plea

Group of Dogs - A Dog's Plea

Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I might lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have [...]

Dishing Up Meals KONG STYLE!

Posted on February 16, 2012 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog, Insights to Dog Behavior No Comments

Kongs are favorite toys for millions of dogs all over the country — this is our Nissa with her Kong. Some dogs carry their Kongs wherever they go, like a woman carries a purse or a small child carries their blankie. It’s the old “don’t leave home without it” routine. People throw Kongs to their [...]

Does YOUR Puppy Have JAWS SYNDROME?

Posted on December 1, 2011 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog, Insights to Dog Behavior, Training Your Dog 2 Comments

I’d like you to meet Jaws — oops — I mean Dexter, a Chow-Shepherd mix puppy currently about six months old who’s family calls him “Dex” for short. Isn’t he just absolutely one of the most precious things on four paws you’ve ever seen? Dex’s owner, Dan and his family, think so too, except for [...]

Hydrotherapy and the Bone Crusher

Posted on November 9, 2011 by Mom in German Shepherd Dog Blog, Health & Safety No Comments

As you all know, in September our guy Riley was diagnosed with severe bi-lateral hip dysplasia meaning both hips were affected. He underwent surgery at the Spring Harbor Animal Hospital in Madison, WI for his left hip on September 19th, 2011 so he’s now just over seven weeks post-surgery. The first 4 weeks or so [...]

I’m so excited to have been personally asked by the Author, Mark Butterworth, to review his new book! I do apologize to Mark for being so long in holding up my end of the bargain and my delay has absolutely nothing to do with the book – just a busy life! So, here is what [...]

Dog Logic is Pretty Darn Simple

Read Before You Feed!

Although Riley's Place feeds our FurKids a raw diet we know that not everyone chooses this for their dogs. If you don't feed raw then choosing the right dry food for your dog is something that should be taken very seriously. Click this Grade Your Dog Food link for a great reference to help you choose a good quality dry food! Those of you who already feed a dry diet would do well to review this as well.

Issues with Your Dog?

If you are having issues with your dog, we welcome the opportunity to try to help! Please first attempt to locate a blog topic that matches your issue and post your comment there. You can use the SEARCH box for this. If you don't find a post that closely resembles your needs, click over to our contact form and tell us about the problem. If your topic isn't currently available on our site and we feel we may be able to help, we'll start a blog post on it. We *do not* provide any form of help privately by email or other method.

IMPORTANT! We hope that our responses are helpful and beneficial to you but please understand that we are not certified veterinarians, dog behaviorists or dog trainers. All information and blog post responses are based solely on our research, understandings, experiences and beliefs. Any suggestions made that you attempt on your own are considered as an "at your own risk" situation and as a decision you made thus is your responsibility. We are not responsible for any negative experiences you may have as a result of you taking any of our suggestions or using our methods. Always remember that what works for one dog does not work for all dogs.
